Doxastic justification through dispositions to cause

چکیده
According to the standard view, a belief is based on reason and doxastically justified—i.e., permissibly held—only if causal relation obtains between belief. In this paper, I argue that can be justified by reason’s mere disposition sustain it. Such disposition, however, wouldn’t establish connection unless it were manifested. My argument that, in cases have mind, manifestation of would add no positive epistemic feature belief: after powers must already been before their manifestation. As result, those who adhere view basing face hard choice: they should either abandon enormously popular doxastic justification has requirement or modify relation.

On the Relationship between Propositional and Doxastic Justification
I argue against the orthodox view of the relationship between propositional and doxastic justification. The view under criticism is: if p is propositionally justified for S in virtue of S’s having reason(s) R, and S believes p on the basis of R, then S’s belief that p is doxastically justified. I then propose and evaluate alternative accounts of the relationship between propositional and doxast...

متن کاملCultivating Sentimental Dispositions Through Aristotelian Habituation
The beliefs both that sentimental education is a vital part of moral education and that habituation is a vital part of sentimental education can be counted as being at the ‘hard core’ of the Aristotelian tradition of moral thought and action. On the basis of an explanation of the defining characteristics of Aristotelian habituation, this paper explores how and why habituation may be an effectiv...
متن کاملDoxastic freedom
Compatibilist doxastic freedom Compatibilism entails that our actions and our doxastic attitudes are mostly free. My argument in defense of this claim will be that the compatibility of freedom and causal determination is not obvious; it needs explanation. Various explanations can be offered. If we apply these explanations to our doxastic attitudes, we are going to see that there is little reaso...
متن کاملBridges between Dynamic Doxastic and Doxastic Temporal Logics
Analyzing the behavior of agents in a dynamic environment requires describing the evolution of their knowledge as they receive new information. But equally crucial are agents’ beliefs over time, since most of our decisions and actions involve uncertainty, from going to work to selling shares. Beliefs, too, are information-based, and when refuted, they have to be revised in systematic ways. Thes...
